You will sense the air of history as soon as you arrive in the colourful town of Penzance. Chapel Street is the most historic part of the town with the flamboyant Egyptian House at the top of the street. This museum of Egyptian curiosities is housed in a building that combines hexagonal-paned windows and sphinx-like figures with the royal coat of arms of George III! It is opposite the Union Hotel where the death of Nelson was first announced while the neighbouring Turk's Head claims to be the oldest pub in town. It is certainly not the oddest however; that prize goes to the Admiral Benbow, built in the 17th century with a pirate on the roof!
