Totnes is a unique and charming Devon market town rising from the banks of the scenic River Dart to the ramparts of the Norman motte-and-bailey Totnes Castle. Known for its New Age community and Bohemian lifestyle, Totnes Fore Street is lined with a motley assortment of independent shops. It is spanned by the Tudor East Gate Arch with its splendid clock. Weekend markets are complemented by the Tuesday Elizabethan Markets when traders wear period costumes. The third Sunday in the month sees the award-winning Good Food Market doing a roaring trade in the Market Square.

Totnes is the second oldest borough in England and is brimming with interesting diversions if you know where to look. Look for the Brutus stone on Fore Street, said to be where Brutus first set foot in England. Once the site of a Benedictine Priory, you can visit the Ramparts Walk and Guildhall, still used for town council business. The Narrows are home to various old pubs and the ancient Leech Wells, said to have medicinal properties for lepers.
