Exeter is a great hub for visitors, combining renowned dining and cultural entertainment with noteworthy architecture, excellent shopping and river activities. The main street of this wealthy city backs onto the Cathedral Yard surrounding the 14th century cathedral. It provides a green park for workers and visitors to relax and enjoy a picnic lunch.

The Cathedral Green is overlooked by Grade I listed buildings including the elegant Royal Clarence Hotel and the Bishop’s House with its 17th century carved oak door. Look for the royal coat of arms above the door of Mol’s Coffee House denoting the former Customs House! Venture upstairs to see the oak panelled room with an elaborate frieze of family shields including those of local adventurers Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh.

The Underground Passages Tour beneath the city is a reminder of just how old this city is. Settled by the Romans, 70% of the city walls still survive intact. The Gothic Cathedral is a youngster by comparison, founded as a monastery in 1050AD. The west façade has some of the finest sculptures in England.

Interspersed among Exeter’s department stores and shops are the ruins of Rougemont Castle, Mint and Tucker’s Hall on Fore Street and the magnificent 12th century Guildhall which is still used for civic functions. With the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, riverside walks, theatres and restaurants, Devon’s county town makes a great centre for cultural holidays at any time of year.
