Dartmouth is best known as the home of the Royal Naval Academy overlooking the scenic Dart Estuary. However it has so much more to offer, from its historic half-timbered buildings and deep water harbour to its castles, inns and noteworthy restaurants.
Turn back time as you explore 13th century Smith Street, one of the oldest on record with many listed buildings. This sailing mecca has narrow streets lined with Elizabethan black-and-white architecture and a colonnaded Butterwalk. Touch history at St Saviour's Church, built in 1335 with an iron door embossed with mediaeval symbols. The gallery was built with wood from the captured ships of the Spanish Armada.
Dartmouth harbour is equally historic. Imagine the Pilgrim Fathers stopping here in their sailing ship Mayflower en route to America, and Geoffrey Chaucer taking in the sights which he later included in Canterbury Tales. Charles II took refuge here in 1671 and his room is preserved in the fabulous Dartmouth Museum.
The estuary is still guarded by Dartmouth Castle on one side and Kingswear Castle on the other. The village of Kingswear is smaller than Dartmouth and is home to the Royal Dart Yacht Club. A chain once ran between the two castles to sink unwelcome ships! Take the ferry from Dartmouth to Kingswear and walk along Dart Valley Trail to Greenway, Agatha Christie's former home which has beautiful gardens and coastal views. Alternatively, enjoy a nostalgic steam train journey or take a leisurely cruise up the River Dart from your Devon holiday cottage.
