Launceston (pronounced Lawn-ston, or Lanson if you're a local) is the Gateway to Cornwall for those travelling down the A30. It is midway between Okehampton and Bodmin and about 20 miles from Cornwall's north and south coasts making it a great centre for holidays.
The historic walled market town sits on top of a hill with the landmark Launceston Castle crowning a manmade mound. As well as its 11th century motte-and-bailey castle, Launceston's claim to fame includes being the earliest Cornish mint, operated by Ethelred the Unready pre-994AD.
A stroll around the compact town centre with its independent shops, Tourist Information Centre and narrow streets brings you to South Gate, part of the old town walls. The White Hart Hotel incorporates an old Norman doorway and the Grade II listed Lawrence House on Castle Street is the local museum. On the outskirts of the town there are plenty of supermarkets including Lidl, Marks & Spencer Food Hall and Tesco.
Things to do around Launceston include touring the well-preserved castle, taking a trip along the Kensey Valley aboard the Launceston Heritage Steam Railway, attending the Castle Rock Music Festival in July and sampling the best pasties in Cornwall from Barnecutt's Bakery on High Street - just look for the queue!
