The twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth are on the edge of Exmoor National Park and part of the Dunkery and Horner Wood National Nature Reserve. The small town of Lynton sits at the top of the cliff overlooking Lynmouth 200 metres below. The villages are connected by a Cliff Railway which provides superb sea views as it transports visitors up and down the steep cliff. Lynmouth sits on the confluence and estuary of the West Lyn and the East Lyn Rivers. The geographic location proved deadly when unprecedented rain fell on Exmoor in August 1952. It caused a torrent of flood waters that swept away bridges, cars and homes.
Today, Lynmouth is a place of charm with narrow streets, whitewashed cottages, small shops, a pretty harbour and beach. It has had many famous visitors including poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Artist Thomas Gainsborough honeymooned in the village and described it as “the most delightful place for a landscape painter this country can boast”. No doubt he was talking about idyllic Watersmeet.
Lynton and Lynmouth are within easy reach of walking, mountain biking and horse riding on Exmoor - Coledridge Way and the Two Moors Way both pass nearby. Adrenalin junkies may prefer an exciting off-road Exmoor Safari in a Land Rover. Just along the coast you’ll find the surreal Valley of Rocks, Exmoor Zoo and impressive Dunster Castle.
