In Victorian times, Ilfracombe was the place to visit and its popularity has left a legacy of large Victorian houses and formal parks. Tunnels Beach, with its tidal pool, is accessed through a tunnel cut by local miners. The High Street may have seen better days, but the harbour and promenade remain lively. The award-winning Landmark Theatre, built in a futuristic double cone design, epitomises past and present rubbing along together nicely to keep most visitors happy.
There is certainly no excuse to be bored here. There are boat trips, a fun fair, two sandy beaches, the Aquarium on the pier, theatres, wildlife cruises aboard the Ilfracombe Princess and day trips to see the puffins and Marisco Castle on Lundy Island. The South West Coast Path offers a scenic clifftop walk to the watermill and rock pools at Hele Bay or the sandy cove at Lee. Remains of an Iron Age fort can be seen on Hillsborough Hill overlooking the harbour and St Nicholas Chapel on Lantern Hill is a local landmark.
The National Trust Torrs Walk has been described as one of the finest in England and historic Chambercombe Manor with its 16th century outbuildings clustered around the courtyard is well worth visiting. Visit in June to join in the Victorian Festival with period costumes, pageants, street fairs and a grand ball. The Carnival takes place in August and the Lighting of the Lights is in November, or drop in anytime to see what's going on.
