Fowey, pronounced "Foy" is a delightful old Cornish port town, beloved by resident novelist Daphne du Maurier, and countless others before and since. From the picturesque harbour the town stretches uphill with narrow streets, characterful pubs and charming shops. There are endless places to eat and drink and Treleaven's luxury ice cream is hard to pass by. Suppliers to Rick Stein's and Jamie Oliver's restaurants, their tricycle is frequently seen at local events doing a roaring trade!
Look out for the mediaeval Old House of Foye on Fore Street, built in 1430; the Town Hall with its museum and aquarium, the Daphne du Maurier Literary Centre and the Quiller Couch Memorial on Hall Way. The oldest relic in Fowey is the Tristan Stone, a 6th century monolith believed to mark the burial spot of Tristan, son of King Mark of Cornwall. Visitors staying in cottages around Fowey can walk the Saints Way which starts at St Fimbarrus Church, take a river trip or go canoeing and sailing along the coast.
The area has many good beaches at Crinnis, Par Sands and Polkerris. Take the Bodinnick Ferry to Polperro or walk to St Catherine's Castle which is accessible from the delightfully named Readymoney Cove. The castle was built by Henry VIII to defend the harbour and has stunning views. Across the Fowey River, Polruan is the site of the matching defensive blockhouse.
