The picturesque fishing harbour at Boscastle lies just five miles northeast of Tintagel on the dramatic coast of North Cornwall. It takes its name from the 12th century motte and bailey castle, which is now a ruin. The charming village lines either side of the river gorge which runs down to the picturesque harbour, built in 1584 by Sir Richard Grenville. Now used by the local fishing fleet, the port was previously used for exporting slate and local produce.
As well as being an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, much of the land around the Boscastle harbour is owned and managed by the National Trust. It is ideal for hiking along the coastal path to the folly, now used as a Coastwatch lookout point. Footpaths meander up the Valency Valley to the tiny settlements and churches of Minster and St Juliots, immortalised by Thomas Hardy in his novels.
Tintagel is best known as the reputed birthplace of King Arthur and is closely associated with the Arthurian legends. The ruined remains of the 12th century Tintagel Castle stand guard on the headland, the footings and remaining walls outlining what was once a sizeable settlement. The village itself has small shops and a slate-built Old Post Office, now a National Trust treasure. Close by is the King Arthur's Hotel, built as a crenellated castle by the Victorians to satisfy the need for a more tangible castle.
