The Blackdown Hills typify England's "green and pleasant land", being covered in farmland and riven with lush valleys containing the Otter, Culm and Yarty rivers. The clay and chalk geology of the Blackdown Hills provides a diversity of rare plants while Iron Age earthworks at Hembury mark an important archaeological site. Within striking distance of the M5 motorway, this area hides the remains of Norman castles, Roman bathhouses, World War II airfields, village churches and the carved remains of 13th century Dunkeswell Abbey. Long-distance “herepath” trails open the Neroche forest to walkers making this a delightful area to lose yourself for at least a week.
