Hartland is frequently overlooked by visitors eager to race along the A39 to better-known Clovelly, but they will have missed a gem. The small village is just inland from Hartland Lighthouse which marks the northwest tip of Devon. At the foot of the lighthouse lie jagged rocks that were the nemesis of many a ship in the past. On a clear day you can see the distant hump of Lundy Island, a paradise for bird lovers and walkers which can be visited by boat from Bideford Quay.
The hilly lanes with their sharp bends make Hartland seem further from civilisation than it really is, just a mile from the main road. The stretch of the South West Coast Path at Hartland Point is described as possibly the most exciting, with challenging inclines, plenty of wildlife and stunning views of the Bristol Channel. Six miles east is Clovelly, a straggle of stepped cottages lining the cobbled street which runs steeply down to the harbour and beach.
This well preserved corner of Devon has been privately owned by three families since the 13th century. Donkeys still pull sledges of groceries and furniture up and down, as they have for centuries, and make an unusual sight. The village has several local shops, a café, pub, post office and All Saints Church, the centre of the village community.
