The South Devon coastal resort of Paignton is one of the gems of the English Riviera. Its Victorian origins are evident with many grand houses and a historic theatre where the premiere of the musical Pirates of Penzance was performed in 1879. Agatha Christie lived nearby and the local department store, Rossiters, was the inspiration for the TV comedy Are You Being Served so the town has a fine pedigree for live entertainment.
The promenade overlooks Paignton's beautiful sandy beach and leads to the 780-foot long pier. It makes the perfect destination for family holidays, romantic weekends and those wanting to enjoy watersports. Swimming, windsurfing, fishing and dinghy sailing are popular, along with jetskiing at Elberry Cove. Clifftop walks and scenic drives to Saltern Cove, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, offer plenty of flora, wildlife, birdwatching and fossil hunting opportunities.
Annual festivals in August include the Paignton Regatta, complete with fireworks, and the Children's Festival. With Paignton Zoo, trips on the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway and the historic Coverdale Tower, there is something for everyone to enjoy with a holiday rental in Paignton.
