The artsy town of Totnes (four miles) has a weekly market, independent shops, a well-preserved motte-and-bailey castle and plenty of pubs and riverside tea rooms. Take the steam train to Buckfastleigh or book a river cruise from Dartmouth. South Devon’s renowned sandy beaches are 16 miles away at Slapton Sands, Beesands and Sugary Cove.
