Holiday cottages & apartments around Dartmoor & country

49 properties found

The wild country of Dartmoor National Park offers a contrasting landscape to Devon's rolling hills, long sandy beaches and thatched cottages. The raised granite plateau covers 954 km² (368 sq miles) and is rich in geology, archaeology and wildlife. Dartmoor has many strange rock formations and over 160 rocky tors (hills). Many young people take part in the gruelling Ten Tors Challenge each May.

Outdoor adventurers love the heather-covered hills and wooded river valleys. There are opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, exploring prehistoric sites and hunting for Dartmoor letterboxes, a forerunner of geocaching. Dartmoor ponies and sheep are often their only companions grazing around ancient stone circles, prehistoric settlements, tombs and clapper bridges.

Information on Dartmoor can be found at the High Moorland Visitor Centre in Princetown, better known as the home of the Victorian Dartmoor Prison. Two Bridges, Postbridge and Widecombe-in-the-Moor with its famous "cathedral" church are popular places to visit for a cream tea in one of the pubs and tearooms. To the southeast of Dartmoor, the elegant stannary town of Ashburton offers fine buildings and a wealth of history. Neighbouring Buckfastleigh is home to the Primrose Line, a heritage steam railway offering rides for seven miles along the River Dart to Totnes.
