Holiday cottages & apartments around Blackdown Hills & country

25 properties found

The Blackdown Hills typify England's "green and pleasant land", being covered in farmland and riven with lush valleys containing the Otter, Culm and Yarty rivers. Located on the border of southeast Devon and Somerset, Blackdown country lies north of Honiton and south of Wellington. It is bordered by Chard to the east and Cullompton to the west and the distinctive geology has made it an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This hidden gem is ideal for hikers, nature lovers and those seeking a quiet break surrounded by serene landscapes and peaceful views. To the north, the Blackdown Hills have steep wooded slopes while to the south they gently descend from a windswept plateau. Delightful villages with old English names such as Upottery and Staple Fitzpaine are tucked into hidden valleys and thatched cottages with cob walls add to the rustic charm. The lanes are a maze of high hedgerows intersecting a quilt of irregular-shaped fields grazed by contented cows.

The clay and chalk geology of the Blackdown Hills provides a diversity of rare plants while Iron Age earthworks at Hembury mark an important archaeological site. Within striking distance of the M5 motorway, this area hides the remains of Norman castles, Roman bathhouses, World War II airfields, village churches and the carved remains of 13th century Dunkeswell Abbey. Long-distance “herepath” trails open the Neroche forest to walkers making this a delightful area to lose yourself for at least a week.
