Just north of Redruth is the delightful harbour of Portreath, once a busy port in Cornwall's mining era. Stroll down to the harbour and imagine unwieldy sailing ships laden with coal and copper ore navigating the entrance to this narrow harbour in a storm. At high tide the huge swell now attracts body boarders and surfers who put on a daring display for spectators.
Portreath is a friendly village, especially if you support the local shops and cafés. The former mining railroads are put to good use as hiking trails and cycle paths lined with industrial and natural history. Take the Portreath Tramroad to Devoran on Carnon Downs or cycle the Wheal Busy Loop past Killifreth Mine's pumping house and the tallest chimney in Cornwall. The sandy beach at Portreath is ideal for families, with a stream running down to the sea offering plenty of opportunities for paddling and dam-building.
A six-mile walk northwards along the South West Coast Path will bring you to St Agnes, another charming village which has traded mining for tourism. It has plenty of craft shops, art galleries and restaurants, making it a great choice for staying in a Cornish holiday cottage. The row of sea captains' cottages down Stippy-Stappy and the free museum capture the area's fascinating past. Walkers can enjoy the coastal paths linking cliffs and coves and sharp-eyed nature-lovers may spot pods of dolphins, seals and seabirds. You can even climb St Agnes Beacon and count 32 church spires in neighbouring village communities!
