There's nothing more fun than attending a horse racing event on a crisp winter's day, and the East Cornwall Hunt Point to Point Meeting is no exception. The horse racing event is held at Great Trethew, near Liskeard in a rural farming area near the charming village of Menheniot. This one day event takes place on the fourth Sunday in February.
Six races at the East Cornwall Hunt Point to Point Meeting
The exciting East Cornwall Hunt Point to Point Meeting is a horse racing event with at least six races during the afternoon. The first race usually starts around 12:30pm. The course is from 2½ to three miles in length and the jumps are of brush fences.
It's a good idea to get there early and position yourself near one of the fences for the most exciting views of the races. Watching the thundering horses gallop towards the fence and then launch themselves over it is truly breathtaking. Occasionally the horse's hooves catch on the brush but hopefully the rider is not jettisoned if the landing is less than steady.
Placing a bet at the East Cornwall Hunt Point to Point Meeting
When you arrive at the Point to Point, pick up a race card to study the list of prospective runners and pick a few potential winners. Some people like to have a flutter based on form or betting odds ‐ the more favourable indicating the best runners according to past form. Serious punters no doubt will have studied the Racing Post beforehand and will know the breeding history of each runner, the trainers and the history of the horse to date.
Other people simply pick a horse by a name or because something appeals. Although they may be backing an outsider, if the horses are placed the winnings are of course much larger.
Before each race the horses are paraded in the ring. It's a good idea to note the jockey's colours so you can follow the race, especially if you have backed one of the runners with a bet to add a little excitement.
At the end of the race the winner and other placed horses return to the paddock to pick up their awards along with the trainer and owner. It's always exciting to watch the proceedings and the atmosphere is great at this more informal meeting.
Two of the races are usually reserved for young riders under the age of 16. Their fearlessness and competitive streak is infectious as everyone reserves a special cheer for these potential jockeys of the future.
Point to Point Meeting is a family day out
Organized by the East Cornwall Hunt, the Point to Point Meeting certainly offers a family day out with the thrill of seeing the horses race and jump. Admission is £20 per car and all occupants making it a great value day out.
I certainly prefer it to flat racing as the jumps introduce a different pace and an element of uncertainty. There's plenty of space for youngsters to run around while adults stand around in groups chatting and enjoying the day.
This equestrian event attracts several trade stands which are always worth browsing. In between the races you can enjoy the catering facilities offering hot snacks, drinks and alcohol as the event is licensed.
