Backed by the UNESCO-listed Biosphere Reserve of dunes, the area is a peaceful haven for birds and wildlife. Head into Barnstaple for the market and Green Lanes Shopping Centre, go surfing on award-winning Woolacombe Beach or explore Exmoor with its wild ponies and zoo. Ilfracombe (eight miles drive) has a harbour with fishing trips, a theatre, high street shops and many seafood restaurants. Further along the coast, Combe Martin has a sandy cove, pubs and a Wildlife and Dinosaur Park. National Trust Arlington Court is worth a visit.
