If you haven't been down to Torquay for the past two years then you are in for a very big surprise, how would you like to float graciously up into space to see the wonders of Torquay, Paignton, Brixham and beyond, hold on tight and I will show you the way….
Never has anything caused so many arguments to the residents of Torbay than 'The Balloon'. Locals are divided as to whether is should go or stay. Whilst the arguments go on I have one piece of advice, whilst it is still here just enjoy it, I have savoured its delights several times and it is absolutely brilliant.
The balloon is situated on Torre Abbey Meadow, which for those of you that don't know is on the sea front in Torquay, directly in front of the English Riviera Centre. The balloon can be seen for miles around and really does dominate the skyline. It is operated by a company called Hi Flyer and they really have the running of this attraction down to a fine art.
So high, you can see for miles
The balloon is a 400ft hot air mass but the difference is that it has a steel cable attached to the bottom of it and this in turn is attached to some advanced machinery that has been fitted in an underground room directly below the balloon. When the balloon trip starts the cable is lengthened and away you go, up into the sky.
The baskets that is carrying you has a large hole in the bottom so that you look down directly below you as well as looking around Torbay. Once you are at the maximum height you can see for miles around and you will notice various scenes around the area that you never knew existed.
Memories are made of this
The balloon trips are available all year round and I would highly recommend that you consider a night flight. The illuminations that run along Torquay, Preston and Paignton sea front really are a delight to savour when it is dark, and this really does give the whole event a somewhat magical feeling. One thing to be aware of is that before you plan your balloon trip, be sure to give the organisers a ring.
You don't have to book your flight but sometimes wind conditions off the sea, make the flights dangerous so they are postponed. Don't let that put you off because safety is really the number one priority and if you really want to plan something that will make your visit to Torbay even more memorable then the balloon trip should definitely be up there at the top of your list.
It has proven to be so popular with the young and old alike and there is something absolutely magical in a child's face when the balloon begins its assent towards the stars, the early nerves give way to waves of excitement and many people who previously experienced a fear of heights find themselves to be able to relish the experience instead being frightened, you really should try it.
I can promise you that it will be an experience that will bring a smile to your face!
