Spring comes early in Devon with plenty of events in March

Although a few annual events have fallen victim to the exceptional rains there's still plenty of action in Devon during March. There's the Devon National Raceday, Devon Performing Arts Festival and Daffodil Day as well as the first ever Big Cake Show.
Regular March visitors to Devon will know that this winter has been particularly wet for the West Country. Nonetheless most attractions are back on track, along with the 2014 events listed below.

With Easter falling in April this year our March calendar is less packed than usual. The Moretonhampstead Festival of Food, Drink and the Arts has unfortunately been cancelled this year due to the incessant rain and unusable fields – but they promise to be back again next year. However, there’s plenty more going on for you to enjoy:

Historic Exeter hosts the Devon Performing Arts Festival

Exeter shows its cultural repertoire with the Devon Performing Arts Festival which takes place from Monday 3rd to Saturday 22nd March. Featuring drama, music and speech, this three-week event showcases the cream of Britain’s talented performers.

The final Gala Concert features the winners from each class along with some performances hand-picked by the judges as the best of the best. This 87-year old festival takes place at the South Street Baptist Church in the heart of Exeter.

Race to the finish for the Devon National at Exeter Racecourse

The Devon National at Exeter Racecourse is a much-anticipated event for racegoers. It takes place annually on Shrove Tuesday, which this year falls on 4th March 2014.

Find out more about the racecourse location, ticket options and what to expect at this traditional jump fixture. You might even want to put a bet on the Tote to add an extra element of excitement to the day.

A host of golden daffodils at Hartland Abbey Daffodil Day

Spring just wouldn’t be spring without Hartland Abbey Daffodil Day which is scheduled for 16th March 2014. Many species of golden daffodils and narcissus brighten the gardens and woodlands of this tranquil beauty spot.

Take an early spring stroll along the winding trails, walk down to the beach or tour this historic home. You’ll be ready for a cream tea by the end of your visit, and that’s available onsite too!

Exeter’s Big Cake Show has all the ingredients for a great event

The first ever Big Cake Show is taking Westpoint Arena in Exeter by storm as bakers and chefs attend this fabulous event on 28th, 29th and 30th March 2014. With a generous helping of trade stands, a dash of show stars, a sprinkling of live bake offs and a cookbook full of new ideas, it’s sure to be a winning recipe!

Whether you are an enthusiastic amateur or a professional cook or baker you’ll find plenty of new tips, ideas and advice at the demonstrations. You could even become the next British Bake Off winner!

These are just some of the events taking place in Devon this March. We’d love you to add a few more to our comments box below. Get the word out about your local events so that everyone can join in!
