Dawlish, in sheltered Lyme Bay, is a wonderful resort for enjoying a traditional family seaside holiday. Along the promenade and seafront is the South Devon Railway, running along the sea wall. Nearby is the public park, "The Lawn", with black swans and other exotic waterbirds on the flowing Dawlish Water. The fast-flowing stream is controlled by a series of weirs and is traversed by many small bridges, adding a romantic aspect to this pretty town.

Dawlish town centre has mainly Georgian and Victorian buildings, harking back to its heyday, but the Church of St Gregory, circa 1438, shows the town has a much longer history. One unusual trait are the many violets found in local gardens. Dawlish was famous in the mid-20th century for its Devon Violets perfume. Wild violets escaped from the market gardens into almost every corner of the town and still offer up their sweet perfume.

Dawlish Warren is a three mile stretch of sand that is tailor-made for making sandcastles, paddling and playing games on the beach. Children's rides and amusements can be found at one end of the beach near the local red sandstone cliffs. Coryton Cove is Dawlish's smaller cove with a café and a car park for easy access and Boat Cove is nearby, sheltered by the headland of Lea Mount. Dawlish is just 12 miles from the historic university city of Exeter with its cathedral and shopping. Teignmouth is just along the coast in one direction and the seaside town of Exmouth in the other.
