December is a real Cornish delight

It stands to sense that a county that is so rich in traditions is the ideal place to spend some time on the run up to Christmas. Cornwall really pulls out all of the stops at this time of the year and it would be safe to say that some of these events will be like nothing you have ever experienced before.
Even though most of the holiday makers have gone home there is still lots going on in Cornwall on the run up to Christmas, which may surprise many people who have not had the pleasure of visiting at this time of the year before.

There are the usual Christmas celebrations but some of the traditions really are quite unique and more and more people are staring to venture down to Cornwall during December to get a taste of something that is very special indeed.

Here are a selection of some of the events that take place in Cornwall and each one of them offer a Cornish experience that would be very difficult to beat.

Lostwithiel Dickensian Evening

Lostwithiel is a name which is about as Cornish as possible to get and the is a night in which the whole community comes together and puts on something which really is quite brilliant.

A wonderful atmosphere is created and it is just like stepping back in time to enjoy Christmas celebrations from times gone by so remember to mark down 13th December in your diary.

Padstow Christmas Festival

Stein by the sea certainly pulls out all of the stops for this festival and it really is alike a who’s who of the celebrity cooking world. Joking aside, this Christmas market in Padstow must be one of the best of its kind in the country and if you are not in the area it is well worth travelling down to pay it a visit. Taking place between the 7th and 9th of December it could easily be described as the perfect weekend.

Liskeard Lights Up

This is the night that the people of Liskeard look forward to all year round. It is when Liskeard does what it says on the tin and the whole town is lit up with various displays and music fills the air. This year’s big night falls on 1st December and the people of Liskeard are counting down already!

Tom Bawcocks Eve

Not many festivals fall this close to Christmas but on December 23rd the people of Mousehole hold a one day celebration to celebrate Tom Bawcock who is said to be a fisherman from times gone by who risked his life to ensure the local residents didn’t go hungry.

This day is about as unique as it is possible to get and just wait until you sample the Star Gazy Pie.

Montol Festival

The Montol Festival is another Cornish event which takes place just before Christmas, this time on December the 21st. Held in Penzance it is a celebration of ancient Cornish traditions and you will definitely not have seen anything like this before!

Fowey Christmas Market

Fowey Christmas Market is now incredibly popular with both visitors and market traders alike travelling down from all over the country to get involved. Taking place on the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of December, this is one of those markets where you really will find a bargain or two.
