You will sense the air of history as soon as you arrive in the colourful town of Penzance. Chapel Street is the most historic part of the town with the flamboyant Egyptian House at the top of the street. This museum of Egyptian curiosities is housed in a building that combines hexagonal-paned windows and sphinx-like figures with the royal coat of arms of George III! It is opposite the Union Hotel where the death of Nelson was first announced while the neighbouring Turk's Head claims to be the oldest pub in town. It is certainly not the oddest however; that prize goes to the Admiral Benbow, built in the 17th century with a pirate on the roof!
This friendly Cornish town springs to life with gusto during the pagan festivals of Golowan and Mazey Day at Midsummer. The Penzance Proms and the Montol Festival are popular arts festivals. Follow the Town Trail from the Tourist Information Centre, visit the cinema or attend an open-air play during your stay in a self-catering apartment or holiday cottage in the area.
Penzance has a commendable range of attractions from fishing trips, beaches, art galleries and museums to helicopter trips to the Isles of Scilly. The Jubilee Swimming Pool is a summer crowd-pleaser while the Morrab Gardens and private library are ideal to enjoy in any season. Visit the Trinity House Lighthouse Centre or Penlee House nearby.
