Gateway to the scenic Lizard Peninsula and Helford River, Helston is best known as the home of the Floral Dance when the streets are taken over by colourful dancers and the town band. Helston was once a thriving port exporting tin, silver and lead until a shingle bar silted up the River Cober to create The Loe, Cornwall's largest freshwater lake. Broad streets in the town are lined with Victorian and Georgian buildings, not least The Monument, a memorial to Humphrey Millet Grylls who saved the local tin mine in 1830. Look for the “kennels”, water channels flowing down High Street! Follow the Town Trail along Coinagehall Street to find the historic Angel Hotel and the 15th century Blue Anchor Inn, still brewing potent Spingo ale originally enjoyed by the monks.
The town has many festivals, weekly markets in the Corn Exchange, a theatre and golf club. There's a free Helston Folk Museum in the Butter Market (look for the salvaged cannon by the door) with more tales of shipwrecks, smuggling and mining.
Porthleven Beach and Praa Sands offer miles of golden sand and surf while the South West Coast Path is perfect for hikers. The National Trust-owned Penrose Estate also has scenic woodland walks in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Fans of the Poldark TV drama can visit the nearby village of Wendron, home of the Poldark Mine, and families will find plenty of thrills at Flambards Theme Park.
