A Devonian Christmas! Just the job

Devon is a county that is full of both the traditional as well as the new type of events that appeal to both the locals and the tourists alike. One thing is most definitely for sure though, on the run up to Christmas there is so much going on there is bound to be something that will take your fancy.
It’s even starting to get a little chilly in Devon at this time of the year but there is still loads going on for both the locals and visitor’s alike. The lead up to Christmas sees all of the usual Christmas fairs along with traditions which make this part of South West England such a very popular place to visit.

Here is a varied selection of things to do in Devon during December with each one being unique in there own right.

Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market

As if Exeter wasn’t a great place to go for Christmas shopping already, this year sees a great addition to the city’s shopping scene – Exeter’s first Christmas Market. Situated on the green outside Exeter Cathedral, this seasonal market could well turn into an annual event if this year is a success.

It runs until 16th December and is open late every night except Sunday so you have plenty of time to get down there and take a look at what is going on.

Polar Express

You’ve seen the film now how about taking a trip on The Polar Express courtesy of the Dartmoor Railway Company. The train is kitted out just like the one off the film and the wearing of pyjamas is actively encouraged, for adults as well as the children. You can take a ride on the Polar Express all of the way through December until the 30th

Christmas at Bygones

This absolute gem of a place is tucked away near to Torquay and for the month of December the life size Victorian street is turned into a winter wonderland. See what life was like over one hundred years ago and get a real Christmas feel from the place.

Greenway Gardens 12 days of Christmas

Everything about this place reminds you of Christmas to such an extent that you will surely feel a tingle down your spine as you walk up to the house. The National Trust have laid on all sorts of attractions to celebrate Christmas here and visiting Greenway in December should definitely be on the cards for you and your family.

Babbacombe Model Village

Babbacombe Model Village is fascinating enough to visit at any time but between the 8th and 24th of December it is transformed into something which is very special indeed. Easy to spend a few hours taking it all in and there are some fabulous places nearby to go for a drink and a bite to eat afterwards.

A North Devon town that has arguably received a new lease of life thanks to the controversial artist Damien Hirst and his even more controversial work of art, Verity. Combine this with a Christmas event on 4th December which brings all of Ilfracombe together and you are left with a very interesting switching on of the Christmas lights.

Plymouth Christmas Market

Plymouth Christmas Market is one of the better Christmas markets that is out there as the selection of stalls is wide and varied and there is so much to do when you have finished shopping. Lot’s of wonderful places to eat and drink means that this Christmas market is one that you will make a point of returning to every year and this year it runs from 22nd Nov to 24th Dec.

Totnes Christmas Nights

There is nowhere that even comes close to Totnes in terms of uniqueness, and the three Christmas shopping nights which are held on the three Tuesday’s before Christmas just goes to show why at least one of these nights should feature in your December diary. Absolutely brilliant! The dates for these special nights this year are the 4th, 11th and 18th of December.

South West Christmas Equine Fair

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that the highly acclaimed South West Christmas Equine Fair is for horse lovers only. There is no getting away from the fact that horsey types will be in their element here but there is lots to keep everyone else happy and it really is a lovely weekend over the 8th and 9th of December.

Boxing Day swims

People have been jumping in the sea and raising money for charity in Devon for years and these Boxing Day swims really are only for the hardy. Big crowds seem to get a weird pleasure out of watching people go through such pain as they encounter the freezing cold sea but lots of money is always raised for charity and that is surely a good thing, isn’t it.

There must be more Christmas related event going off all over Devon, do you know of any that you would like to share with us?
