Rustic cottage on the outskirts of pretty Appledore, The Retreat is a historic fishermen’s cottage with beamed ceilings, sash windows and well-equipped kitchen. Full of character and charm, it has two comfortable bedrooms (one double, one with twin singles) on the first floor and a modern bathroom and separate toilet on the ground floor. There’s a private courtyard garden at the rear of the cottage for relaxing with a glass of wine or scrumpy in the evening.
Step out of the front door of this cosy retreat, and find yourself in a quiet lane of cottages in a scene that has little changed in 200 years. Wander past bay-windowed galleries and cafŽs and find a favourite place to eat during your stay.
The coastal village of Appledore is an unspoilt gem. Once a hub for boatbuilding, dating back to the Armada, the quay is now a place for crabbing and boat trips. There’s a small sandy beach and children’s playground just a minute from the cottage. Take the passenger ferry across the estuary to Instow or book a round of golf at the Royal Devon Golf Club nearby. Climb over the pebble ridge at Northam Burrows Country Park to reach the beautiful four-mile sandy beach at Westward Ho! Families will love a day at the Milky Way Adventure Park (four miles) and the Big Sheep attraction (11 miles).
