A Bird’s Eye View of Devon: Hot Air Ballooning and More!

The best way to appreciate the Devon countryside, coastline and local landmarks is from the air.

South Devon is blessed with many different landscapes, from the long sandy beaches of Torquay to the rolling farmland of the South Hams dotted with sheep and the wild untamed beauty of Exmoor. The south coast of Devon is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty and it is not hard to see why.

The best way to appreciate the countryside, coastline and local landmarks is from the air. Many flights in all types of aircraft cost well under £99, so even on a self-catering holiday with a modest budget a trip over Devon by air is very affordable. It will certainly give you something to talk about to friends and colleagues who thought a holiday in Devon sounded rather boring!

Hot Air Balloon Rides in Devon

When you think of enjoying a scenic ride from the air, most people think of hot air balloon rides. There are more than eight sites around South Devon and Exeter which offer unforgettable hot air balloon trips. Imagine drifting high above the treetops, with the farmland spread out below in miniature.

See the patchwork of fields, old farm buildings, herds of wild ponies, church spires, lighthouses and other landmarks which are simply not visible from ground level. The expansive blue skies (Devon enjoys more than 200 days of sunshine a year!) are yours to enjoy with just the occasional hiss of the gas burner to break the tranquility. Hot air balloon rides usually last three to four hours.

Parachuting and Sky Diving

Those wanting a little more adrenalin-pumping activity can enjoy seeing Devon at a slightly racier speed. Tandem skydives and skydiving experiences are offered at Tiverton Airfield. Skydiving is surprisingly affordable and the freefall followed by the deployment of a parachute is, for many, very addictive!

Hang Gliding and Paragliding

Experience the total tranquillity of soaring and circling on the thermals, drifting silently on the wind in a dual control glider over stunning Dartmoor countryside. After initial training and safety procedures you will be able to take off from a low hill and experience the thrill and exhilaration of a controlled flight beneath the canopy.

Gliding and Flying Lessons

Trips and flying lessons can be booked at Dunkeswell Aerodrome near Honiton in two seater gliders for a great experience gliding over the stunning Devon scenery. Gliding lessons make a great surprise treat for a birthday. Alternatively visitors can book a flying lesson with one of the flight schools which are based at Exeter Airport.

Flying over the countryside in a 2 or 4-seater aircraft with family or friends is an unforgettable experience and is sure to be the highlight of your holiday in Devon. See the historic city of Exeter from the air or follow the coastline for miles seeing well-loved seaside towns from a new perspective.

However you choose to explore Devon, you will certainly not be disappointed and the memories and photographs you take back home are sure to last a lifetime.
