A weekend in Holsworthy

For a real taste of countryside life, there is no place like Holsworthy - go shopping at the local farmer's market and enjoy the simpler aspects of life.

Introduction to Holsworthy

The market town of Holsworthy in the north West of Devon is an excellent place if you want to explore both Cornwall, Devon and the mesmerizing coast along this part of England.

Holsworthy lies at the River Deer and is a town that goes back many centuries and was mentioned in the Domesday Books. It’s hilltop location has made it a popular place to live since Saxon times, and has helped the town to gain popularity as a holiday destination. The town is surrounded by rolling hills and offers a beautiful market square where you can discover many remnants of the history of the Holsworthy.

Culture and attractions in Holsworthy

The livestock market in Holsworthy has been held on this side since 1905 and is definitely and experience you won’t forget – get a taste of the county life and shop – if you’re not into cattle, the Wednesday farmers market might be a better option for that, though.

Aside from that, there is always something going on in Holsworthy, which you might not expect with a town this size: four times a year, a craft fair is held in the Memorial Hall, where local and national artists and craftsmen offer their goods – a visit will surely inspire you.

If you are more inspired by speed and beautiful cars, every June a vintage car rally comes to the town. Many visitors come from all over Britain or even further afield to enjoy the spectacle.

Even in the winter months, people here know how to celebrate: Holsworthy Carnival is held every November and is Devon’s last carnival of the season.

Yet undoubtedly the biggest event is St Peter’s Fair, which is held every July. For a whole week, there is live entertainment and music throughout the town. The highlight might be the annual crowning of the Pretty Maid, a beauty contest that dates back to 1841. On top of that, the fair features ale tasting, a traditional fun fair and the Furry Dance where people dance on the street throughout the town. Why not join them?

Must-see highlights in Holsworthy

The Holsworthy Museum is an excellent place to check out if you want to learn more about rural life in the area in the past and about the many saints and legends that have shaped the area.

The Tarka Trail is a dream for cyclists – the flat path leads from Meeth to Ilfracombe and will not disappoint even the most ambitious cyclist.
