A weekend in Bude

Bude, located right between Devon and Cornwall, has beaches that can easily rival the world's best: surfing, swimming, diving and beach volleyball are just some of fun things you can do here.

Introduction to Bude

This small town at the River Neet offers endless opportunities for nature and sport lovers, but is a great place for a romantic getaway or family holiday alike.

The golden, sandy beaches surrounding the town are a joy, no matter what your idea of the perfect holiday is. Swimming and relaxing in the natural salt water swimming pool in Summerleaze, surfing at Widemouth Bay or going for a quiet, peaceful walk along the Bude Canal are just some of the options available.

The Towpath and the splendid coast offer scenic views on foot, by bike or even on horseback. There are many other activities that let you enjoy the scenic countryside and seaside atmosphere: why not try your hand at archery or go for some rock climbing?

In case you should run out of things to do – although that’s very unlikely – Bude offers excellent transport links. The town’s location just off the A39 means that you can easily visit the attractions of North Devon and many other wonderful places within an hour’s drive from here.

Culture & attractions in Bude

Undoubtedly, Bude’s award-winning beaches are the town’s biggest draws. Some are perfect for surfing, while others, such as Summerleaze Beach with its tidal sea pool, are perfect for relaxing. Many of them are hidden treasures and not swamped with tourists, even during the high season, which also means a lot are particularly dog friendly – so bring your best friend along!

The real highlight of the coast, however, are the cliffs that start at Hartland Point, then pass Bude and terminate at Boscastle. The area is the only part of the Cornish coast that features picturesque sandstone cliffs. These are also the highest cliffs in Cornwall, the highest of which are located just south of Bude and are 746ft high.

However, the town offers many more attractions that are not related to the sea – it’s a perfect place for an active yet relaxing holiday that will have you return home completely recharged. The Leisure Centre is a great place for golf, table tennis and tennis fans. For some water fun, regardless of the weather, head to Splash Undercover Water Park which is sure to entertain the whole family!

Yet another place to visit with the little ones is the Wonder Years Toy Experience, where kids and the young at heart can step back in time and play with vintage toys. The quirky adjoining shop is an excellent place to buy slightly different souvenirs.

Older kids and thrill-seekers will feel right at home at the Milky Way Adventure Park, located just a short drive from Bude in Devonshire, which feature’s the area’s biggest roller coaster.

Must-do highlights in Bude

A definite must-do when in Bude is to spend some time of the town’s various spectacular beaches – swim, surf, walk around the rugged coast or just lie in the sun and unwind completely.

Bude Castle and its battlements are worth a visit for every age. The Victorian castle features a modern Heritage Centre and the town’s local museum, but the main draw might be the Castle Tearooms which are not only one of the best places to eat in Bude, but offers wonderful views from the Lower Wharf.

Nature lovers should not miss the Bude Formation, a spectacular cliffscape that is part of the South West Coastal path. It’s a great place to discover during a walk, but the cliffs harbour many secrets about the history and evolution of the area, so it’s worth getting a guide or join a tour, even if you are not usually in geology!

Eating & drinking in Bude

Bude’s best dining options can be found along the beach and Widemouth Bay.

The beautifully named Life’s a Beach for example, an unassuming beach café during the day, overlooks Summerleaze beach and turns to a great bistro serving excellent seafood at night.

Bay View Inn offers amazing views over Widemouth Bay and the sea and is open all day for a quick snack or hearty meal.

Accommodation in Bude

Bude offers a variety of high-standard holiday homes and apartments for any taste.

Bluesy Beach House for example, located in Widesmouth Bay, has a wet room leading directly with access to the sea, making it the perfect place for surfers. With three bedrooms and it’s own garden, it is a haven for your next family trip or a surfing adventure with friends.

For those who would like to be closer to the centre, there are many apartments to choose from, such as the cosy one bedroom apartment Maymyo, which is a stone’s throw from the town centre and features its own romantic courtyard.
