Devon in February – Still plenty going on

From ghostly nights out to learning how to make a scarecrow, there are plenty of things to keep you amused in Devon during the month of February
Most people will agree that February can be a funny old month. It is as if everyone is starting to come out of hibernation after that the post-Christmas period of January and starting to look forward to the year ahead.

It’s getting lighter in the evenings and the thought of lazy summer days don’t seem as far away as they did just after the festive period.

Devon and Cornwall are usually a few degrees warmer than the rest of the UK throughout the year and that is especially noticeable during the winter months with shirt sleeves still being worn on a regular basis.

Enough about the climate though, let’s take a look at what is happening in Devon during the month of February.

Hartland Abbey – Snowdrop Weekend

It would not be an exaggeration to say that if the does not get you in the mood for spring then nothing ever will. Vast swathes of snowdrops and other wild flowers as far as the eye can see will definitely lift the spirits. Hartland Abbey is a lovely place to visit any time of the year but make a note in your diary for the weekend of the 9th and 10th of February to see the flowers in all of their glory. Unfortunately due to heavy rain, the Hartland Abbey Snow Drop Weekend 2013 has been cancelled.

Dartmouth Castle Ghost Tour

Friday, February 15th is the date which has been set for the . This event is suitable for the whole family and very well organised. Be aware of some nasty surprises lurking around each corner though as there may be all sorts of characters lying in wait to give you a fright!

Bovey Tracey Scarecrow Spectacular

The wonderful takes place on February 22nd and is organised by the National Trust. You will be shown the traditional methods of making a scarecrow and there is a fantastic little pub around the corner where they serve carveries which are the talk of South Devon!

Symposium on Roman Exeter

You don’t have to be a resident of Exeter to find the absolutely fascinating. It takes place on February 23rd and is a full day of talking about exactly what the excavations in the city revealed. The location for the event is the excellent Royal Albert Memorial Museum and a walk around the city afterwards to investigate your findings afterwards would be highly recommended.

Exeter LOL Festival

The is gaining a lot of recognition due to some of the highly talented comedians who are involved. Not many people will argue that Exeter, with its large student population and wonderful venues is a great choice for this ground breaking festival. It takes place between January 12th and February 12th and it is well worth making an effort to attend at least one show to experience what it is all about.
