Topsham is a charming seaside village overlooking the River Exe where it merges with the River Clyst. Popular as a sailing mecca and known for its gourmet restaurants, Topsham has some unusual architecture along the Strand, a popular road of holiday homes. Some of the three storey cottages have Dutch gables, a throw-back to Topsham's days as a thriving port. Many of the houses are built of Dutch bricks which were brought over in ships as ballast from Holland. The ships returned to the continent laden with wool and cotton. Settled in Roman times, Topsham has a 10th century St Margaret's Church built on land granted by King Athelstan in 937AD.

Topsham's sheltered harbour is a great place to stroll and admire the collection of sailing and fishing boats. It was once famous as a shipbuilding port in the 19th century. Now in quiet retirement, Topsham has several nature reserves for wading and migratory birds. The Museum is beautifully laid out as a fully furnished house of period rooms and exhibits of local history. Topsham Pool is an open air swimming pool.

Further down-river is Exmouth, a sizeable town popular with retirees. The long beach and seafront offer windsurfing, kayaking, kite surfing, and other watersports. Boat trips up the Rive Exe are also popular. Families will enjoy the Exmouth Fun Park Adventure Playground, putting green and Jungle Fun on the esplanade. Just out of town is the unique A La Ronde, a 16-sided house designed for two spinsters who filled it with their arts, crafts and trinkets from their Grand Tour of Europe.
