Whitsand Bay and Downderry are small communities overlooking the miles of sand that run almost continuously from Rame Head in the east to Portwrinkle in the west at low tide. The firm sands are ideal for long walks beneath the high cliffs with dramatic coastal scenery. The beach is a popular spot for surfers and there is a lifeguard service from May to September. The South West Coast Path runs along the clifftop linking each small hamlet along the way.

Whitsand Bay is also a popular dive site. The former Royal Navy frigate, HMS Scylla, was scuppered in 2004 to provide an underwater reef alongside the Liberty Ship James Eagan Layne which was a casualty of World War II. Overlooking the sands is the hexagonal bulk of Tregantle Fort. When the red flags are raised, take note - the firing range is in operation! Perched above the bay is the Whitsand Bay Hotel and Golf Club. The golf course has superb coastal views and the 19th hole in the manor house hotel includes award-winning food in the Bay Restaurant.

Further west is the coastal village of Downderry with a fine selection of holiday bungalows and beach houses overlooking the shingle beach. The wide beach has easy access from the car park with a café and fine views across to Looe Island and Eddystone Lighthouse, eight miles out to sea. This friendly Cornish community has a parish church and a chapel, a shop, Post Office and several restaurants.
