Saltash is the first stop after crossing the Tamar Bridge into Cornwall, either by road or rail. With 14,000 inhabitants it is one of the largest towns in Cornwall with a busy Fore Street lined with shops, boutiques, banks, take-aways and a post office/newsagent. The town has a good number of old inns, particularly The Boatman down on the waterfront in the shadow of Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge. Noteworthy landmarks include the Guildhall and the exclusive China Fleet Golf and Country Club overlooking the River Tamar.

Local attractions include the 11th century motte-and-bailey Trematon Castle, the local museum and Mary Newman's cottage, better known as the wife of Sir Francis Drake. Just across the estuary are the suburbs of St Budeaux in Devon, the Devonport Dockyards and Plymouth city centre.

Further downriver is Torpoint with its busy car ferries handling tourist and commuter traffic between Cornwall and Devonport. This sizeable town makes a good base for a holiday cottage in Cornwall, within easy reach of the National Trust Estate of Antony, the beaches at Kingsand and Cawsand, Plymouth Hoe and the Barbican.
