The attractive Cornish harbour town of Mevagissey was once the hub of the county's pilchard fishing industry. The impressive old buildings bear testimony to it once being a rich and prosperous port. Today it is known for its charming narrow streets, fine restaurants and quaint craft shops. Never intended to accommodate vehicles, the zigzagging streets can be a bottleneck at times.

Mevagissey is a great place to take a scenic harbour cruise or try your hand at mackerel fishing or crabbing. Freshly caught fish finds its way into the harbourside fish and chip shops, restaurants and historic pubs, once the haunt of local smugglers.

Despite its miniature size, Mevagissey has plenty to see and do from the stylish holiday homes in the village. There is the World of Model Railways, a Folk Museum and a harbour aquarium in the old lifeboat house. Browse the art galleries and gift shops, visit the neighbouring sandy cove at Portmellon or walk the scenic coastal path to Chapel Point.

The beautiful Lost Gardens of Heligan nearby were the brainchild of Tim Smit who also created the Eden Project. The 200-acre estate includes restored flower gardens, a 20th century walled kitchen garden and glasshouses. The sub-tropical valley jungle has magnificent palms, bamboos and a series of ponds which can be explored from raised boardwalks. Every visit should end in the onsite café with a delicious Cornish cream tea.
